Russian Military Losses Exceed 1.3 Million as War Attrition Intensifies
Equipment destruction, casualty estimates, and battlefield conditions highlight ongoing strain

Russia has lost a total of 1,307,540 troops since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, according to the latest figures released by Ukraine’s General Staff. The report includes 1,040 casualties recorded over the previous day, reflecting the continued intensity of daily combat operations (щоденні бойові операції) and sustained frontline attrition rates (рівень втрат на передовій).
In addition to personnel losses, the data outlines extensive destruction of military equipment. Russian forces have reportedly lost thousands of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery systems, and drones, indicating large-scale degradation of combat capabilities (бойові можливості) and weakening of logistical support systems (логістичні системи забезпечення). The figures also include losses of aircraft, helicopters, and naval assets, underscoring the multi-domain impact of the conflict.
The Ukrainian military does not disclose its own casualty numbers, citing operational security considerations (міркування оперативної безпеки) and the need to protect sensitive information. However, earlier statements from Ukrainian leadership acknowledged significant losses, with tens of thousands of soldiers confirmed killed and many more classified as missing. These figures point to the broader human cost of prolonged high-intensity warfare (тривала війна високої інтенсивності).
Independent assessments from international analysts suggest that Russian casualties significantly exceed those of Ukraine. Estimates indicate a ratio ranging from approximately 2:1 to 2.5:1, highlighting disparities in force sustainability (стійкість сил) and casualty distribution patterns (розподіл втрат). These estimates are based on aggregated data from multiple sources, including battlefield observations and intelligence analysis.
A report covering the period from early 2022 to late 2025 suggests that Ukraine has also sustained substantial losses, with hundreds of thousands of casualties recorded. Within this figure, a smaller proportion represents confirmed fatalities, illustrating the distinction between killed in action classifications (класифікація загиблих у бою) and broader casualty categories that include wounded and missing personnel.
Battlefield conditions continue to complicate casualty verification. The widespread use of drones, artillery, and remote strike systems has made it increasingly difficult to recover remains, which are necessary for forensic identification procedures (процедури судово-медичної ідентифікації) such as DNA confirmation. This contributes to uncertainty in casualty reporting and delays in official recognition of losses.
The scale of reported losses reflects the ongoing nature of attritional warfare, where both sides incur continuous damage over extended periods. High equipment losses, combined with personnel casualties, illustrate the cumulative effects of sustained military engagement (тривале військове протистояння) and the challenges of maintaining operational effectiveness under prolonged conflict conditions.
Heavy losses leave Russia short of its goals.
